Project Description

The Souls of Our Teachers: An Inside Look at Urban Education documentary project is a collaboration between Mecklenburg Ministries, Temple Beth El, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Communities In Schools. Based on the success of Souls of Our Students, this documentary-style video presentation will give viewers an honest look at the teaching challenges and the unique opportunities that exist in urban public school education today.

This powerful video will highlight critical issues through the voices and first-person experiences of seven public school teachers across the greater Charlotte area. It will be used as a tool to recruit effective teachers to our most challenging schools, to inform parents and the community about the importance of active involvement and support for public education, and to encourage volunteerism in our public schools.

Distribution channels for this documentary video may include CMS-TV Cable 3 and WTVI-TV. It will also be distributed on DVD to potential teacher candidates, schools, PTAs, community associations and churches.

Project Goals

• To increase understanding that excellent public schools across our city are in the best interest of every citizen of Charlotte-Mecklenburg
• To inspire effective teachers to teach in our challenging, high-poverty schools
• To acknowledge the challenges, dispel the myths and highlight the rewards of teaching in high-poverty schools; to elevate the perception of teaching as a noble profession
• To encourage Charlotte’s businesses, its faith community, and the general public to actively advocate for and support public school education
